By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

Haiti Update

We would like to give an update on our plans as they unfold. As of right now we are not heading to Haiti, yet we plan on going to serve in God's good timing. I'll explain the details:
We started gearing up to go to Haiti, planning and securing what we needed to travel. We were able to get out of our rent free of charge, I was laid off work for what looked liked months to come, Nancy's work was willing to let her go and then come back and keep her job, we bought a P.O. Box, a storage facility, composed a support letter and set up the blog. We also had met with our pastor and his wife a couple times to go over our plan. They were very encouraging in praying for us and even willing to take a special offering at church on our behalf. We were going to send the letters out, they were stamped, addressed, and ready to send and all of this was done in about 2 days. So we were moving fast and everything was working for us, we felt God calling us to Haiti.
The day we were going to send the letters out my (John) boss called and said he needed me for the following working day. Because we hadn't sent the letters, my boss gave my job back after being laid off for a month and we also found out that we would not be on board the Mercy ship but rather part of a ground team we decide to stay. After praying, reading and seeking God's will we hope that we have made a good decision. So, we have been learning the timing of God and his will before our own. We believe He has a plan for us to serve in Haiti and we are diligently praying and striving to seek His will and plan for us.
It seemed best for me not to burn a bridge by turning down my job, not yet anyway. So we do plan on going in the months to come and we are trying to save and prepare to serve on the Mercy Ships, our applications have been turned in and they know of our willingness to serve.
We also have to decide where we are going to live and where Nancy will work in the next couple of months, we have a lot of things to decide and plan, so we need prayer in figuring out the timing that God has for us. We love to serve and advance the Kingdom to all nations and we feel gifted and called to serve on mission for Jesus.
We would like to thank all those who have been praying for us and helping us in our endeavor, and ask for your steady continuance in that. We will continue to post on our blog as things develop.

"Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayers and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made know to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

The Haiti Mission

Dear Family and Friends, 01-20-2010

“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

1 John 3:16-18

God has put a great desire in our hearts to serve Him, more specifically to serve Him in Haiti. We will go to Haiti both to aid during this time of tragedy and to advance the Lord’s kingdom. We have felt for some time now that we were designed as a couple to do this work of the Lord. We both strongly understand the importance of mission, weather it is carried out in the states or abroad.

We have decided to help the efforts in Haiti via Mercy Ships, a Christian organization that is equipped to help in areas of surgical medical treatment, general healthcare, basic life needs replacement, such as food and water, reconstruction and recovery . We urge you to check them out on the web and learn more about the amazing work God has in place. http://www.mercyships.org/content/home

Mercy Ships is a non profit volunteer based organization; its volunteers need to raise their personal finances before and during their time in the field. The monthly cost per couple will be determined by the need of “Mercy Ship Teams” on the ground in Haiti. We will have no other revenue while serving in Haiti other than donations from our supporters.

The Specifics on our date of departure, location of work, length of service, and overall cost will be more defined as we hear more from Mercy Ships. We will be updating our blog with the latest information available to us.

Prayer is much needed for this endeavor and prayer for Haiti is most important. Specifically you could pray that we straighten out all the details needed to move forward with our departure. Pray that we may understand the Lord’s Will in our efforts.

Sincerely, John and Nancy Spears
